A new report paints a picture of a workforce in flux, where recruitment, retention, reorganisation, reskilling and redundancies are unfolding simultaneously. In this environment, HR’s role is to provide clarity and direction – ensuring organisations can navigate immediate pressures while building long-term capability.
Australian employers are facing intense competition for talent, with 69 per cent actively recruiting and one in three struggling to fill vacancies, according to the Australian HR Institute’s latest Quarterly Work Outlook report.
Meanwhile, changes in the economic and technology landscapes are rapidly reshaping employers’ broader workforce planning strategies.
Over a quarter of employers are planning redundancies in the September quarter, and nine in 10 employers say roles are at risk of disruption from AI and automation in the next three-to-five years.
Together, the insights indicate that Australia’s workforce is shifting under the combined weight of five forces: recruitment, retention, reorganisation, reskilling and redundancy. These five ‘R’s are shaping every aspect of how organisations attract, develop and manage talent.
According to the report, workforce stability depends on HR treating the five ‘R’s as interconnected forces, not separate problems to be solved one at a time.
Recruitment struggles often feed into retention challenges, skills shortages drive reskilling and reorganisation, and redundancy often comes as a consequence of cost control or structural change.
This calls for an integrated approach to balance immediate workforce pressures with planning for long-term capability.
“Given persistent concerns over recruitment difficulties, effective and longer-term strategic workforce planning and a switch to a more skills-based operation will give organisations a competitive advantage, especially given the disruptive impact technology, AI and automation will continue to have on Australian workplaces,” says AHRI’s CEO, Sarah McCann Bartlett.
The infographic below breaks down the data on each of the five ‘R’s and the practical takeaways for Australian businesses.
