Join AHRI ACT for an insightful evening with Karen Toohey, ACT Human Rights Commission Commissioner for Discrimination, Health Services, Disability and Community Services, as they unpack the 2024 positive duty reforms under the ACT Discrimination Act and what they mean for organisations.
This engaging session will explore the practical implications of the reforms preparing the APS and other organisations ahead of the final 2027 application date for some. The Commissioner will provide an overview of guidance developed for the APS that will be helpful for other organisations and share insights from recent matters before the Commission. It’s a valuable opportunity for HR professionals to deepen their understanding and prepare their organisations, or support current work under these obligation

The Commissioner handles all complaints received by the Commission from members of the public. This includes complaints about alleged discrimination, vilification and sexual harassment, health services, disability services, services for older people, services for children and young people, treatment of vulnerable people, sexual and gender identity conversion practices, occupancy disputes and complaints from victims of crime.
The Commissioner also promotes awareness of rights and obligations and improves service provision and outcomes for people protected by relevant legislation. Systemic issues can be investigated and addressed by the Commissioner though Commission-initiated considerations. The Commissioner also contributes to legislative and policy development in the jurisdictions listed above, and provides education and training
