The ripple effect of HR: Belonging, strategy and impact
For over 20 years, HR has been more than a career—it’s been a calling for Josette Moffatt CPHR the Founder and Managing Director of Talent Ecology. Across internal leadership roles and an independent consulting practice, Josette shares how the HR profession empowers individuals, drives business outcomes, and shapes workplaces where people can truly thrive.
AHRI membership has been a constant companion throughout her journey—providing access to thought leadership, professional tools, a supportive community, and nationally recognised certification that elevates her practice and credibility.
Why do you love HR?
HR is my vocation and has afforded me a rewarding 20-year career working across sectors, spanning internal HR leadership roles and operating my own HR and Transformation consulting practice with the mission to help humans at work. In serving others, HR has a profound ripple effect on individuals, enabling belonging and self-worth, and ultimately flows into society. I also see my HR role as a steward of workforce risk and commercial outcomes, which I enjoy as it combines my strategic mindset, systems thinking, and love of solving complex problems. Whether it’s workforce planning, navigating employment relations issues, or leading an organisational redesign, I thrive where people strategy meets business execution.
AHRI membership has been an invaluable part of my professional journey—supporting my growth through learning, collaboration, and connection. As a member, I have access to the latest research, contemporary HR thought leadership, and updates on employment legislation, all of which enable me to confidently and effectively perform my role.
HR is a key driver of enterprise performance, where we anticipate future capability, mitigate risk, reshape cultures and workforces to deliver business outcomes. I enjoy coaching leaders, so they make better, evidence-based decisions about talent, structure, and transformative investment. I’m fortunate to leverage my extensive strategic and hands-on experience leading several large-scale operational and cultural transformations, bringing empathy, commercial insight and lessons learnt to add real value.
The breadth of my HR experience spans domains from business partnering to recruitment, organisational development agendas that build leadership capability, empowering employees to take charge of their growth, and giving leaders the tools to support them. I’ve developed performance management approaches that move beyond compliance to genuine performance enablement.
Employment relations, organisation design, and change management are perhaps where I’ve spent the most time in recent years. I’ve led multiple initiatives in this space—from function-level restructures to enterprise-wide reconfigurations. I enjoy the complexity, the systems thinking, and the opportunity to influence how work gets done strategically and operationally to deliver business outcomes.

I’ve also served as a mentor to new, emerging, and mid-career professionals through AHRI’s mentoring programs.
