Course Overview – Workforce Planning – Foundations
This introductory course provides the foundations for approaching the development of a workforce plan in partnership with the business. It highlights the collaborative role that Human Resource professionals play in facilitating the co-development of the plan to ensure it is business owned and led. The dynamic nature of the global economy, rapid technological advancements, shifting political landscapes, evolving demographics, competitive labour markets and changing societal perspectives, are key drivers for the importance of working in strategic partnership with our businesses to undertake workforce planning and inform our people initiatives. This approach ensures the organisation is effectively positioned to cultivate the workforce required in the future. This course delves into the key components of workforce planning and outlines practical “how-to” approaches for establishing the problem statement, collaborating with key stakeholders, identifying critical capabilities, evaluating at-risk job roles, assessing workforce risks, and establishing implementable and measurable actions. Participants will walk away with a greater understanding of where to start and how to deliver a workforce plan.

Target Audience 
Human Resources professionals seeking to initiate the development of a workforce plan for their organisation who would like to benefit from understanding the fundamental components required for crafting a fit-for-purpose, co-designed, implementable workforce plan.

Key Learning Outcomes
Following the training, participants will be able to:

  • Define workforce planning, the business case, roles and responsibilities, key components, and timing
  • Develop a workforce planning problem statement to guide areas of investigation throughout the project
  • Understand the appropriate approach to workforce planning that ensures a thorough understanding of the current workforce, external drivers, and organisational context
  • Determine key stakeholders to collaborate with in the development of the workforce plan to ensure it is business owned and led
  • Identify critical capabilities, capacity and at-risk roles required to deliver strategic objectives, key business initiatives, core services and stakeholder outcomes
  • Analyse workforce issues and risks which may impact your organisation’s ability to achieve improved business outcomes
  • Develop impactful and cost-effective prioritised initiatives to mitigate risks and align to achieving
  • Understand the key foundations to implement, manage, monitor, and iterate a workforce plan
