Recent Employment Legislation: What Do Employers Think?
Recent Employment Legislation: What Do Employers Think?
October 2025
Australian employers have been navigating one of the busiest periods of workplace reform in recent memory. This new research report by AHRI discusses the early impacts of the reforms, from the right to disconnect and Respect@Work to casual employment and fixed-term contracts. Drawing on survey data from 619 employers and insights from six national focus groups, the report spotlights which reforms employers say are delivering benefits, where HR teams are feeling the pressure, and the practical steps leaders are taking to adapt.
Summary of Key Findings
Employers say the right to disconnect is delivering upside
A majority of employers (58%) report higher engagement and productivity since implementation, with work-life balance and stress indicators also improving for many.
Key reforms are seen as net-positive for workplaces
Employers report strong net positive impacts from Respect@Work (+66), flexible working (+47), fixed-term contract limits (+37) and casual conversation (+35)
Employers are open to further reform, but are realistic on timing
There is appetite to extend the right to request flexible working for all employees and add reproductive health protections. However, many employers say new reforms should be delayed for two years to give HR professionals and employees some much-needed respite.
