AI Agents at Work: What HR Needs to Know
December 10 @ 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM AEST
Free - $20.00QLD People Analytics Network
Until recently, AI at work meant a chatbot: you ask, it answers, and a person decides what happens next. AI agents go further. They read the inbox, screen applications, update records and reply to candidates, often as a chain of steps nobody checks one by one. They are already being built into the office software, recruitment systems and HR platforms many organisations use every day.
The questions this raises for HR are about people, and answering them well takes a working understanding of how agents behave. Who supervises an agent? Who answers for it when it gets a decision about a person wrong? What happens to the roles, skills and workload of the people around it? And because an agent works across systems and teams, the same questions land on legal, IT, governance and operations too.
This session is a plain-English look at how AI agents actually work, and what they change for the people, roles and decisions HR is accountable for.
What we’ll cover
• What an AI agent actually is: from a chatbot that answers to an agent that acts, the four moving parts behind every agent, and a simple two-question test for any agent someone proposes
• Where agents are arriving in HR: screening, scheduling, onboarding and HR helpdesks, and the ways agents fail (confidently wrong, misreading the goal, manipulated by what they read, quietly out of date)
• Managing a workforce that includes agents: borrowing the employee lifecycle, supervising agents without rubber-stamping them, and redesigning roles task by task
• Who owns an agent: what IT, legal, governance, operations and HR are each answerable for, and why every agent needs a named human owner
Why this matters for HR leaders
Agents increasingly read and act on people data: candidate records, employee files, performance information. The HR practitioners who understand how they work will shape how agents are introduced, rather than inherit the consequences. The session also falls the day after the Privacy Act’s new transparency rules for automated decisions come into force (10 December 2026), which puts automated decisions about people firmly on the agenda.
You leave with:
• A plain-English grasp of how agents work, enough to follow (and question) the technical conversation
• A simple two-question test for any agent: what can it do, and what can it do without a person signing off?
• A clear view of the people questions agents raise: supervision, role design and wellbeing
• One simple rule, every agent needs a human owner, and four questions to take back to work on Monday
