Every team has a shape. What’s yours?

Benchmark your team’s capability against the Australian HR profession.

Coming September 2026: AHRI’s new HR Team Capability Assessment tool

Be among the first HR leaders in Australia to use data to inform your team's workforce planning

As HR teams face increasing pressure to deliver strategic value, adopt emerging technologies and support organisational change, leaders need greater visibility of workforce capability to make informed investment decisions.

AHRI’s new HR Team Capability Assessment helps HR leaders measure their team against the Australian HR Capability Framework, identify capability gaps and focus workforce planning and development investment where it will have the greatest impact.

Understand the shape of your HR team

The Australian HR Capability Framework provides the benchmark for HR capability in Australia and is underpinned by ten behaviours and seven capabilities including 28 skill and knowledge areas. The HR Team Capability Assessment measures where your team sits against the Framework, identifying capability strengths, development opportunities and priorities for future growth. Your team’s results are also benchmarked against the wider Australian HR profession and your industry, providing valuable context for decision-making.

AHRI’s HR Team Capability Assessment gives HR leaders the insight to:

Strengthen workforce planning intelligence

Build the evidence base for learning investment

Inform organisational development planning

AHRI HR Team Capability Assessment FAQs

The HR Team Capability Assessment Tool gives organisations a group-level view of their HR team’s capability. Results are aligned to the Australian HR Capability Framework across 10 behaviours and 7 capabilities, including 28 knowledge and skill areas, helping HR leaders to identify team strengths, capability gaps and development priorities.

It is designed for HR leaders, HR managers and decision-makers who want clearer insight into their HR team’s capability, development priorities and learning investment needs.

The HR Team Capability Assessment is designed for HR teams of three or more members to support anonymity while remaining practical for smaller teams. There is no maximum number of team members who can participate.

The assessment consists of 38 questions and usually takes up to 30 minutes to complete. Completion time may vary by individual.

HR team members complete an online questionnaire. Their responses are used to create a personalised team capability report, followed by a debrief with an AHRI Capability Partner to talk through the report and recommended next steps.

The report provides a team-level view (and sub teams if required) of your HR team’s capability, showing where the team sits against the benchmark for the Australian HR profession and industry and how results align to the Australian HR Capability Framework. It highlights team strengths, capability gaps and priority development areas, with tailored professional development recommendations to support development planning.

The assessment maps team-level results to the Australian HR Capability Framework and benchmarks them against the wider HR profession and your industry (results from over 4000 Australian HR professionals). This helps show where the HR team is strong, where capability gaps may exist and where targeted development may be needed.

The debrief is delivered with an AHRI Capability Partner and helps team leaders understand their group report, key strengths, capability gaps and recommended next steps for targeted development.

Yes. As the HR leader managing the assessment, you will have access to individual capability reports for each HR team member, as well as the overall team report. Individual assessment responses are not visible.

HR team members who hold an AHRI Membership, or are linked to an AHRI Organisational Membership, can access a comprehensive individual capability report through their AHRI dashboard. Team members who are not AHRI Members or linked to an AHRI Organisational Membership will still contribute to the team assessment results and will receive a summary individual capability report.

Yes. The assessment can provide both an overall HR team report and separate sub-team reports. The HR leader can access the overall team report and all sub-team reports. Sub-team leaders can only access their own sub-team report and the overall team report and cannot view other sub-team reports.

No. Other HR team members cannot view your responses. The HR leader managing the assessment can view individual capability reports, but not individual responses.

We recommend completing the HR Team Capability Assessment once a year. This allows you to measure changes in your team’s capability over time, track progress against previous results and evaluate the impact of any development activities or recommendations that have been implemented.
