ReturnToWorkSA (RTWSA) is a government-owned monopoly insurer and regulator, that had to realign its services with a new business model to address legislative changes. To prepare for the final transition to the new work injury legislation, Monique Roberts managed RTWSA’s organisational redesign project, Designing Our Future.

All employees were included in a seven-month consultation process. “The project team designed the workshops throughout the four-stage process so that employees were integral to the future design of our business,” says Monique. Employee consultation led to a new macro function being developed, changes to 60 per cent of sub-functions and 75 per cent of activities, and over 5,700 micro work tasks being identified.

Despite staff reduction by 6 per cent, and 45 per cent of employees being displaced and having to apply for suitable redefined roles, no industrial disputes or staff grievances were received. Monique puts this down to the planned “head and heart leadership and change communication program” that supported all employees through the transition.
