Q. WHY SHOULD I JOIN AHRI?

Membership with AHRI will allow you to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in HR, access essential resources and information and advance your career with the establishment of professional networks. Membership with AHRI is highly regarded by employers as it clearly demonstrates your commitment to the profession. For more information on the benefits of membership please refer to the member benefits pages on the AHRI website.

Q. WHAT MEMBERSHIP TYPE SHOULD I JOIN ?

Eligibility for membership with AHRI is assessed based on a combination of experience and qualifications. See our website to find out which type of membership is right for me for the requirements of each membership grade. It is important that you review the minimum requirements for each membership level. If after reviewing this information you are still not sure which membership grade to apply for please email members@ahri.com.au and include a copy of your CV for a complimentary assessment.

Q. I WAS A MEMBER SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND WOULD LIKE TO REINSTATE MY MEMBERSHIP. HOW DO I GO ABOUT DOING THIS?

If you remember your username and password, try signing into the website and visit your profile. If your status shows as lapsed or overdue, you can renew by clicking the "Renew Now" button and making payment. Please ensure you have updated your contact details before making your payment. Click on the pencil icon for the relevant sections in your profile to edit your information. If you cannot remember your username or password or it has been more than 2 years since you were last an active member please contact the membership team by emailing members@ahri.com.au. In your email please provide as much information as you can so that we can identify your previous membership record. If it has been less than 2 years since you had a membership we will issue you with a renewal notice. If it has been more than 2 years you may be required to complete a new membership application and provide supporting documents.

Q. HOW QUICKLY ARE MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS PROCESSED?

New affiliate and student member applications are processed right away. Professional membership applications are normally processed within 5 business days, but can take up to 10 business days during busy periods.

Q. WHAT SORT OF WORK EXPERIENCE DOES AHRI CONSIDER HR RELEVANT FOR THE PURPOSES OF ASSESSING MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY?

Human Resources encompasses many different types of work experience. We will consider each person's experience on an individual basis. Relevant work experience can include but is not limited to: Human Resources management, mentoring and coaching, training and development, workforce planning, HR information systems and payroll, recruitment, consulting, management, and organisational development.  The professional memberships are underpinned by the Professional Recognition Framework. Learn more about AHRI's Professional Recognition Framework

Q. I'D LIKE TO SELL MY SERVICES TO YOUR MEMBERS - SHOULD I BECOME A MEMBER SO THAT I CAN PROMOTE MY SERVICES AT YOUR EVENTS?

One of the main benefits of AHRI membership is the networking opportunities that we offer. However, canvassing by delegates is strictly prohibited at AHRI events and forums. Promotional materials may not be distributed at any event/forum except by event sponsors. Delegates violating this policy will be asked to leave the event and AHRI members may have their membership revoked. If you are interested in promoting your services or products we offer a number of options for advertising and sponsorship. Please contact our corporate sales team for more information.

Q. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP WITH AHRI?

Please refer to the membership benefits pages on the AHRI website. Some benefits are specific to membership grades. For example, AHRI ProCover professional indemnity insurance is only available to professional members (Graduate, MAHRI, CAHRI and Fellow).

Q. WHAT IS PROCOVER?

AHRI ProCover is a Professional Indemnity insurance master policy that covers all of our Professional Members (some exclusions and limits apply - please check the ProCover section of our website for further information).

Q. WHAT IS AHRI:ASSIST?

AHRI:ASSIST is a member only benefit that guides you through all stages of the employment lifecycle with information sheets, checklists, guidelines, templates, and more. If you can't find what you're looking for in the AHRI:ASSIST database, AHRI:Assist has an email support service via an online form. An experienced HR professional will answer your question, or let you know where you can find the information you need.

Q. HOW LONG DOES A MEMBERSHIP PERIOD RUN FOR?

Membership is for 12 months from the date of application or renewal. Your renewal date is rounded to the closest end of the month. For Example, If you apply on or before 15 November - your renewal date is 31 October in the following year, or if you apply after the 15th of November your renewal date will be 30 November.

Renewals & Fees

Q. MY MEMBERSHIP HAS LAPSED - CAN I STILL RENEW ONLINE?

Yes, if you remember your sign in details you can renew within your member profile. Please note that lapsed members are charged a re-joining fee of $55. Alternatively, please email renewals@ahri.com.au and we will check your details and issue a renewal invoice to complete. Alternatively, please call us on 03 9918 9200 and we can take payment over the phone.

Q. CAN I PAY MONTHLY FOR MEMBERSHIP?

AHRI requires full payment of membership fees for a 12 month period, payable in advance. We do not currently offer monthly membership.

Q. CAN I PAY MY MEMBERSHIP FEES IN INSTALMENTS/ ARE THERE PAYMENT PLANS?

AHRI does not currently offer payment plans or payment of fees in instalments. If you are experiencing financial difficulty please contact the membership team to discuss your options.

Q. DOES AHRI OFFER CONCESSION FEES FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE UNEMPLOYED OR WORK PART TIME?

AHRI doesn't currently offer a concession membership for unemployed or part-time employees, but we encourage you to contact us as we may have other options available to you.

Q. CAN I RENEW MY MEMBERSHIP AS PART OF MY CONFERENCE REGISTRATION?

AHRI offers a "New Member Today" option for conference attendees to apply for a new membership in conjunction with your conference registration. This offer is for new memberships only and can not be used to renew an existing membership or to reactivate a lapsed membership.

Q. WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T RENEW MY MEMBERSHIP ON TIME?

AHRI gives you 30 days grace period following your renewal date, during which time you will still receive most of your member benefits. Professional members who do not renew on time must immediately cease using their membership grade postnominals and member logo 30 days after their renewal date. IMPORTANT: If you do not renew your membership before your renewal due date your cover under AHRI ProCover (which only provides protection to financial professional members of AHRI) will cease the day after your renewal date. You need to keep in mind that if you require a professional indemnity policy to continue to cover past human resources activities, you need to keep renewing your membership on time to ensure the cover remains in place.

Q. HOW LONG AFTER I RENEW MY MEMBERSHIP WILL I RECEIVE MY RECEIPT?

Receipts for renewal payments are automatically sent to the email address on your account within 48 hours of your payment being received. Please ensure that we have a valid email address on file for you. If you have asked someone else to make payment on your behalf please make them aware that the receipt will be emailed to your email address as we cannot issue a receipt to a 3rd party.

Q. I AM LOCATED OUTSIDE OF AUSTRALIA - ARE MY FEES DIFFERENT?

Members located outside of Australia are not required to pay Goods and Services Tax (GST). A $15 postage fee is also payable,

Student Membership

Q. I AM A STUDENT MEMBER. DO I HAVE ACCESS TO ALL MEMBER ONLY AREAS OF THE WEBSITE?

Paid Student members have access to all of the content on our website, with the exception of Ask AHRI email service.

  • Our free Student Membership has been discontinued.  Members who are still Free Student Members may maintain this membership until they graduate.  However we encourage you to upgrade to take advantage of the great new benefits included with our Paid Student Membership.
  • Members who currently hold a Free Student Membership have restricted access to the website.  If you are interested in accessing all the content on the website upgrade to Paid Student Membership.

Q. DO I HAVE TO BE A FULL-TIME STUDENT TO BE ELIGIBLE TO BE A STUDENT MEMBER?

Student membership is designed for students who are not currently working full-time in HR. You can be a part-time or full-time student.

Q. HOW LONG CAN YOU BE A STUDENT MEMBER FOR?

Student membership is available for the duration of your studies and is renewed on a year by year basis.

Q. DO I GET A CARD WITH MY STUDENT MEMBERSHIP?

We no longer issue student members with member cards.  You will receive a confirmation e-pack and receipt within 7 days of your application being received, which will provide you with login details to the AHRI website.

Q,I HAVE (OR NEARLY HAVE) GRADUATED FROM MY COURSE. WHAT MEMBERSHIP IS AVAILABLE TO ME?

Graduate membership has all the benefits of our full professional membership but at a great introductory rate. If you do not meet the eligibility requirements for Graduate membership you might consider Professional Member (MAHRI) or Affiliate membership as better fit alternatives.

Graduate Membership

Q. I AM STUDYING PART TIME BUT I AM OVER 25 YEARS OF AGE. CAN I STILL APPLY FOR STUDENT OR GRADUATE MEMBERSHIP?

Yes - there is no longer an age limit for Graduate Membership. If you are still studying and you are not working in a HR role please email studentmember@ahri.com.au and we will be happy to discuss you situation and advise of the best option. Graduate membership is available to recent graduates (graduated within the last 2 years). If you do not fall into the above categories you may wish to consider affiliate membership or professional membership (MAHRI). Please contact the membership team to discuss your options.

Q. HOW LONG CAN I BE A GRADUATE MEMBER FOR?

Graduate membership is available for 2 years, after which you will be automatically upgraded to Professional Member (MAHRI)

Professional Membership (MAHRI, CAHRI and FAHRI)

Q. CAN I DOWNGRADE MY PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP TO AN AFFILIATE ONE?

From time to time AHRI is contacted by members who wish to downgrade their membership from a professional grade to affiliate membership. Please keep in mind the following before requesting this:

1) Only professional members are covered by AHRI ProCover

2) If you decide at a later date to upgrade your membership you may be asked to supply your supporting documents to us again

3) If you are concerned about your ability to complete CPD please contact the membership team - you may be surprised by the activities you are already completing that can be claimed as CPD points

Q. WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for continuing professional development. All professional members (Graduate, MAHRI, CAHRI and Fellow) are required to complete CPD. CPD points for activities completed through AHRI are automatically recorded for you. For other activities completed externally members can log in to their CPD recording tool to plan and record their CPD activities. For more information on CPD please visit your member profile after signing in to the AHRI website and download the CPD guidelines.

Q. I AM LOCATED OUTSIDE OF AUSTRALIA OR IN A REMOTE LOCATION AND CANNOT ATTEND ANY AHRI EVENTS. HOW CAN I COMPLETE THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF CPD HOURS IF I CAN'T ATTEND EVENTS?

As a professional member undertaking CPD, you will have multiple options for accruing CPD hours. We do understand that members outside of Australia or in remote locations will have limited opportunities to complete any AHRI short courses or attend events. However, there are many other activities that you can complete to accrue CPD points.

For example, you may attend any HR related short courses, events, conferences and seminars in your location (these do not have to be formally recognized by AHRI) and the number of hours you spent at the course or event can be recorded as CPD hours in your AHRI online CPD record. These activities can include in house training or training completed outside of work hours. You may also consider e-learning courses and webinars offered by AHRI as options when planning your Professional Development.

Q. HOW DO I USE POST-NOMINAL LETTERS AND WHY SHOULD I USE THEM?

Post-nominal letters (also known as designatory letters) are a set of letters that are included after your name to indicate your qualifications, honours, or accreditation. AHRI professional members (with the exception of Graduate members) are able to include their AHRI membership grade as a post-nominal. This is a short-hand way of indicating to others that you have been assessed by AHRI and have achieved a particular membership grade based on this assessment. AHRI encourages all professional members who are entitled to use post-nominals to do so, thus proudly demonstrating your professional standing and credibility, and improve your career prospects. You may use more than one post-nominal after your name. Here are two examples:  1) Jane Smith PhD, FAHRI (Jane has a PhD and is a Fellow of AHRI). 2) John Smith BBus(HRMgt)Hons, MAHRI (John has a Bachelor of Business in HR Management with honours, and is a Professional Member of AHRI). Post-nominal letters are typically included on business cards, Resumes and CVs and are increasingly being included in email signatures.

Q. CAN I MENTION THAT I AM A MEMBER ON MY WEBSITE/CV/BUSINESS CARDS/LINKEDIN PROFILE?

As an AHRI member you should be proud that you are part of Australia's largest and most respected Human Resources professional association. If you are a professional member you are encouraged to use your postnominals on your business card, email signature, website and linkedin profile.  Professional members will also be provided with a Professional Member logo annually and can download this from their profile page.

Affiliate and Student members are not eligible to use the professional member logo. Lapsed members should not use the logo or post-nominals until they have renewed.

Q. I HAVE RETIRED - CAN I KEEP MY MEMBERSHIP AND DO I STILL NEED TO COMPLETE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

AHRI values the contribution that retired members have made to the HR profession and we offer a special rate of $99.00 per year so that retired members can stay in touch with developments in the profession. Retired members can continue to receive all of the benefits of membership they previously received. Retired members are exempt from professional membership CPD requirements. If you are retired or you will be retiring in the near future please contact the membership team to advise us.

Existing Members – General Questions

Q. CAN I SUSPEND MY MEMBERSHIP?

Yes. Membership can be suspended on a year by year basis up to a maximum of 2 years. We will issue you with a renewal notice at the end of your 1st year suspension period, but you may contact us at any time in the interim if you wish to reactivate your membership.  Suspending your membership is a suitable option for people who are travelling, on extended leave or who may be experiencing financial difficulty.  People who suspend their membership are easily able to reactivate their membership and are able to retain continuous membership status (and are therefore eligible to receive benefits under AHRI's Member Loyalty Program).

Q. CAN I KEEP MY MEMBERSHIP WHILE I'M ON PARENTAL LEAVE?

Yes. We offer a special rate for members on parental leave of $99.00 per year, for a maximum of two years. We will issue you with a renewal notice at the end of your first year.  If you wish to continue your parental leave rate for the second year, please contact us after the renewal notice is issued.

Q. I RECENTLY BECAME A MEMBER BUT NOW i DON'T NEED IT ANYMORE. CAN I GET A REFUND OR TRANSFER MY MEMBERSHIP TO SOMEONE ELSE?

Individual membership is not transferable, and membership fees are not refundable.

Q. HOW DO I UPDATE MY ADDRESS AND CONTACT DETAILS?

Your details can be updated in several ways.

  • via your member profile on the website,
  • by returning your HRmonthly cover sheet to us, or
  • by amending your details on your renewal form.

If you are having difficulty updating your details please contact the membership team by phone or email and we will assist you.

Q. I'VE CHANGED MY NAME - HOW DO I UPDATE MY NAME WITH AHRI?

Please email members@ahri.com.au to advise of a change of name and we will update your details for you.

Q. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MAINTAINING CONTINUOUS MEMBERSHIP - DOES AHRI HAVE A LOYALTY PROGRAM?

Yes, AHRI rewards members who have maintained membership with us continuously, with milestones at 5, 10, 20 and 30 years. Each milestone is recognised in a different way, but can include additional discounts for events registrations, presentation of certificates or plaques or public recognition in AHRI's HRMonthly magazine.

Q. HOW DO I UPGRADE MY MEMBERSHIP?

Members can upgrade at any time by completing the appropriate online upgrade form, which can be accessed from their member profile. Please note that members who are linked to an organisation membership should email organisationmember@ahri.com.au for further information.  Please ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements before submitting your documents for consideration of an upgrade. A one-off, non-refundable upgrade assessment fee of $55 is payable.

Q. I WOULD LIKE TO CANCEL MY MEMBERSHIP – HOW DO I DO THIS?

If you have decided that you would definitely prefer to cancel your membership (as opposed to suspending your membership) please email members@ahri.com.au. If you would like to retain your membership until the end of your current membership period please don't email us until you have received your renewal notice. In your email we would appreciate any feedback you might have, including the reason you have decided to resign your membership.

Q. CAN I SHARE MY LOGIN DETAILS WITH A FRIEND OR COLLEAGUE?

Your login details are only for your own personal use and should never be shared. Your personal information (including your home address, email address and date of birth) is visible to anyone using your login details, as is your CPD record. Please also ensure you have logged out of the AHRI website before you register another person for an event or course.

Organisation Membership

Q. HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN I INCLUDE IN OUR ORGANISATION MEMBERSHIP?

An AHRI organisation membership includes an individual professional membership or affiliate membership for one person within your company. And if your organisation has more than one HR team member, we offer discounts on their individual memberships at the following rates:

2-19 memberships – 10% off

20-49 memberships – 15% off

50 or more individual memberships – by negotiation

Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORGANISATION AND INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP?

With organisation membership your company or organisation becomes a member of AHRI, providing a range of benefits to your company and your staff. Individual members have their own personal membership with AHRI, which they can hold independently of the organisation membership, or they can be linked to your organisation membership. Each individual receives personal login details for the AHRI website and a range of benefits specific to their membership grade.

Q. HOW DO I BECOME A LINKED MEMBER OF AN ORGANISATION?

All requests for new or existing individual members to be linked to an Organisation Membership should be directed to the organisation's principal member or nominated contact.  (if you are unsure of who this is please contact the AHRI membership team). If you would like to become a new member and be linked to the organisation membership you will need to complete a linked member application form, which is available on the AHRI website.

Q. I AM A LINKED MEMBER OF AN ORGANISATION - HOW DO I UNLINK MYSELF?

Organisation Memberships pay for a set number of linked members, which can be transferred to another staff member in instances where staff members cease employment with your organisation, or change roles. It is important that AHRI is notified when a staff member who has a linked membership leaves your organisation so that this membership place can be provided to another staff member. Unlinked members will be issued with a renewal notice so they have the opportunity to renew their membership as an individual.

CIPD/AHRI Reciprocal Membership agreement

Q. I USED TO BE A MEMBER OF CIPD BUT I LET MY MEMBERSHIP LAPSE WHEN I RELOCATED TO AUSTRALIA. CAN I JOIN AHRI AT THE SPECIAL RATE AT THE SAME LEVEL I HAD IN THE UK?

No. You must have a current membership with the CIPD in order to be recognised through the reciprocal agreement. You are, of course, welcome to apply for membership with AHRI as a non-CIPD member, but this membership will not be at the special reduced rate that we offer to CIPD members

Q. I AM A CHARTERED FELLOW WITH CIPD AND A CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL WITH AHRI. CAN I UPGRADE MY MEMBERSHIP LEVEL WITH AHRI TO MATCH MY CIPD MEMBERSHIP?

Yes. Please send an email to members@ahri.com.au with evidence of your CIPD membership grade and currency (such as your membership card) and we will process your upgrade.

Q. CAN I JOIN AHRI SO THAT MY CIPD QUALIFICATIONS ARE RECOGNISED IN AUSTRALIA?

The reciprocal agreement between AHRI and CIPD allows members to apply for the equivalent membership grade. It does not, however, provide formal recognition of any qualification completed to obtain your CIPD membership.

Q. IF I UPGRADE MY MEMBERSHIP WITH AHRI DO I NEED TO UPGRADE MY MEMBERSHIP WITH CIPD AND VICE VERSA?

Upgrading your membership with either association is preferable, but is not essential. Upgrades should be done through your "home institute", which is the institute you joined first.

Q. DOES AHRI CHARGE A FEE TO UPGRADE MY MEMBERSHIP?

A standard $55.00 upgrade fee is payable for upgrades to a level you don't currently hold with either association. If you are upgrading to "match" an existing membership level you hold with the CIPD no fee will be charged.

Q. DO I HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF BOTH ORGANISATIONS?

In order to be eligible for the reduced membership fees for AHRI membership you must maintain your CIPD membership.

Q. WHAT SORT OF EVIDENCE DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE TO AHRI TO PROVE MY "CURRENCY OF MEMBERSHIP" WITH THE CIPD?

AHRI will need evidence of both your membership grade and that you are a financial member of CIPD. Your CIPD membership card shows both your membership grade and your next renewal due date, which is appropriate evidence. Alternatively you may wish to provide a receipt for fees in conjunction with a copy of your membership certificate.We will also need to know the date you became a CIPD member and you'll need to provide a copy of your CV and the appropriate application form.

Q. I AM HALF-WAY THROUGH A CIPD COURSE AND I AM THINKING OF RELOCATING TO AUSTRALIA. CAN I COMPLETE MY COURSE WITH AHRI?

CIPD courses are unique to the United Kingdon and CIPD and cannot be completed through AHRI. AHRI offers various courses for HR Professionals, including a Certificate IV in HR and the AHRI Practising Certification Program should you wish to study with AHRI.

Q. HOW CAN I PAY MY MEMBERSHIP FEES FOR AHRI MEMBERSHIP?

Payment can be made by completing an application form or renewal form, by telephone using your credit card, or you can post a cheque to us (in Australian Dollars) or pay directly into our bank account. Please contact the membership team if you need further information.

Q. WILL I BE CHARGED A CURRENCY CONVERSION FEE IF I PAY BY CREDIT CARD?

You may be charged a currency conversion fee by your bank or credit union if paying by a credit card issued outside of Australia. Please check with your credit card provider or bank before making payment.

Q. DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR AHRI AND CIPD?

Yes, however in most cases you are able to claim CPD points for the same activity with both associations.

Q. HOW DO I USE MY POST-NOMINALS/DESIGNATORY LETTERS NOW THAT I AM A MEMBER OF BOTH ASSOCIATIONS?

Convention dictates that you include the professional membership grades in the order that you obtained them. For instance, if you became a Chartered Fellow of CIPD before you became a Fellow of AHRI your postnominals will looks something like this: John Smith Chartered FCIPD FAHRI

Q. DOES THE AGREEMENT ALLOW ME TO BECOME A MEMBER OF BOTH ASSOCIATIONS FOR A SINGLE FEE?

No. The agreement allows CIPD members to apply for AHRI membership at the equivalent grade, and vice versa. Fees are still payable to both associations.

Q. I AM AN AHRI MEMBER AND I WISH TO JOIN CIPD. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

The agreement between the CIPD and AHRI allows you to apply for CIPD membership at an equivalent level of membership.

You'll need to provide the CIPD proof of your AHRI membership and a current curriculum vitae, and on joining you'll automatically be awarded the equivalent membership grade of CIPD. Please note that thereciprocity agreement was revised in early 2016 and AHRI members who wish to obtain a chartered CIPD membership (MCIPD or FCIPD) will need to have been formally certified by AHRI, via the AHRI Practising Certification Program or the Senior Pathway. You will need to provide evidence of your certification to the CIPD.
