In 2014, the Department of Finance had a disability employment rate of 1.5%. This was significantly below the representation of people with disability in the community and the broader public service. As a public service agency, it is essential that we are representative of the broader Australian community we serve. In the delivery of public policy, having a diverse cohort is critical to our position as a trusted adviser that successfully delivers key outcomes on behalf of Government.
We identified that our challenge required a multi-layered approach. We implemented a range of initiatives to increase the disability confidence and awareness of our organisation. In order to increase the representation of people with disability, we needed to look at our recruitment and attraction strategies. This included initiatives such as entry level programs and affirmative measures for people with disability.
Over the past five years the Department has increased the representation rate of people with disability, which is a sustainable outcome for Finance. Finance now has a disability employment rate of 4.3%.
